140. Stop Pigeonholing Students! Use the Every Lane on the Highway
Too often we pigeonhole students and give them one educational path to follow based on mystudent factors and the limits of our schools. Let's stop by changing our thinking! Students need to have whatever opportunities are necessary to work toward their career goals. With a focus on careers and interests instead of a certain path (like CTE, Honors, etc.), we can help students change lanes on the highway, as needed, to best prepare them for their career while moving away from the educational silos that are limiting our students.

124. A Mission Reset: The Challenge of Launching the S.C. Governor's School For Agriculture and Reclaiming a 225-Year-Old Vision
In May 2022, the South Carolina Governor's School for Agriculture recognized its first graduating class after an arduous journey to revive and reshape the mission of the former John de la Howe School. During the past three years, the state's third Governor's School, and the only residential high school in the nation dedicated to agricultural education, has seen its enrollment more than triple, and today the student population on this 1,310-acre campus is made up of the future leaders in the Palmetto State's largest industry. In this presentation, agency president Tim Keown and principal Greg Thompson will explore the challenge of transforming the Governor's School for Agriculture into a 21st century center for career and technical education built on the foundation of an ambitious vision cast by one man in 1797. Here, modern CTE meets the timeless, essential nature of farming in South Carolina.

Students can receive a complete tool set and tool box worth almost $10,000 at no cost along with a paid apprenticeship in one of our 273 SC Dealerships across SC. We've also awarded 68 Scholarships, totaling $173,000 since 2014. We invite instructors, counselors, career specialists and educators to attend who feel this may be a good fit for their school.

50. Upgrading Computer Science and Technology Education in the Classroom
Students as young as 5 have laptops, 8 year olds have cell phones. Technology is very different for students today than it was 10 years ago. Our education system has not changed to upgrade with the times. Many times, students have more in-depth knowledge of computers and technology than their teachers. Teachers need to have their knowledge upgraded and what we teach our students needs to reflect current technology. Stop teaching outdated information and start investing in technology learning that will benefit students and teachers alike. I propose that we start the discussion with what our students need and design learning to follow students from kindergarten to graduation.

Today’s convergence media incorporates the corroborative reporting tools of audio and video, along with the power to produce and disseminate information at previously unimaginable speed and scale, as provided by the Internet. It is becoming increasingly rare to find photographers performing only the duties ascribed to them in a pre-digital economy. Convergence media has taken photojournalism to new heights and also shaken it to its core, specifically in terms of the business model under which traditional media outlets are potentially adaptive. Mobile journalism and its offspring, citizen journalism, are playing a significant role in the changing visual media landscape.

While traditional pathways require the completion of an educator preparation program through an accredited college or university of higher learning, this by no means excludes those with differing backgrounds from achieving South Carolina Educator Certification.
DIRECT provides the teaching training for a work-based alternative teacher certification program coordinated by the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE), Office of Career and Technical Education (CTE) that allows new CTE teachers to meet eligibility for the initial professional education requirements for certification through the SCDE Office of Educator Services.

114. Preparing for Tomorrow: How IGPs and a Customized Curriculum Supports the Future Workforce
Our work supports South Carolina’s businesses, its workforce and economic development system, the workers of today and tomorrow, and bridging the gap between LMI and students to aid in making better education and career choices. When it comes to students and careers, the problem is often not the limitation of data, but its excessiveness. Students need help uncovering and making sense of what is possible for them. When we are given the opportunity to show a student what is possible, they start to see prospects. Allowing LMI to work closely with educators (Counselors K-12 and some college-level Career Specialists), supports our mission and serves as an excellent benefit to South Carolina’s future workforce.

48. The Third C in College and Career Ready: Collaboration!
High schools in South Carolina are tasked with meeting the SC School Report Card criteria every year. The College and Career Ready indicator determines if students graduating from a high school are prepared for college or careers after graduating and impacts twenty-five points of the total report card rating. The challenges of meeting these postsecondary needs and requirements are too complex for one individual to manage. It requires solid collaborative leadership among many individuals. Students at Gilbert High School authentically learn and meet college and career readiness demands with the support of school counselors, administrators, teachers, and a career specialist and graduation coach. Join us as we share current practices used to improve the College and Career Ready score and, more importantly, how we prepare students for their E- Enrolled, Enlisted, or Employed, after graduation.

Now that we are all digital learners the issues that your students and parent/guardians who use assistive technology devices encounter in attempting to access basic information on your class or school website is even more critical. This session will define digital accessibility and help teachers learn what to do to make their online content accessible. Ms. Leach taught Special Education in public and private schools for eight years and helped implement Universal Design for Learning at the college level. Why are apps like Instagram and TikTok so popular and, let’s admit, addicting? What if educators harnessed this power when designing materials and resources? Join us for an interactive session that focuses on the components of cutting-edge graphic design from beginning to end. We’ll teach how to plan intentionally and incorporate graphics, fonts, and images in a visually appealing way. While Canva will be the main platform for design, we will share other helpful websites. 70. Using Technology to Increase Depth of Knowledge
One of the top four myths about using computers in K-12 classrooms states that putting computers into schools will directly improve learning; more computers will result in greater improvements. So, how is that working for you? Just because schools, teachers, and students have access to technology does not guarantee that student knowledge will improve. What’s needed is a common language that can be used across disciplines that identifies different degrees of classroom technology integration. Mr. Puentedura’s SAMR model does just that. His model categorizes strategies for classroom technology implementation into four stages-Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. These strategies show teachers how to personalize learning and help students to visualize complex concepts. This presentation is designed to help you to understand the key components of the SAMR model and provide an example of an activity as it manifests within these four stages.
